The 2019 Block 2 Cabernet is part of the Rowlee range and represents the very best varietal selections from each vintage. Sourced from mature vineyards in New South Wales, these wines offer exceptional varietal definition and a unique sense of place which contributes to the personality of each wine.
The resilience of the vineyard was on show in 2019 with a hot and dry vintage across the continent. Overall fruit yield was down with harvest 7 to 10 days earlier than average. Thanks to prudent water and canopy management, grape quality was outstanding. Sugar levels were moderate, while acid and acidity were unexpectedly good delivering wines with bright fruit power, moderate alcohol levels and fresh integrated fruit acid profiles.
Planted in the 1990’s by Penfolds, the vineyard for this cabernet sits on red clay loam soil with ironstone and quartz. Situated in Gundagai, overlooking the Murrumbidgee River the site is ideal for the production of powerful and elegant, medium-bodied red wines.
The fruit was harvested in March 2019 and immediately transported to the winery where it was de-stemmed to 7 tonne fermenters and cold soaked for 5 days. The fermentation took place for 10 days with pump overs twice a day. Following this, it was gently pressed off and transferred to French oak barriques and hogsheads. After 9 months of maturation the wine was blended and bottled.
